Meet Deede, MA, MFT

Deede Amhowitz Psychotherapist
Deede Amhowitz, MA, MFT—Psychotherapist & Counselor for Adults, Couples & Families

With World Mental Health Day this month, we decided to catch up with our psychotherapist and mental health counselor, Deede Amhowitz, MA, MFT, whose been with us since we first opened the center.

As a child of divorce, Deede was exposed to therapy at a young age and found it fascinating. It wasn’t until college though that Deede’s calling fully came into view. She started an internship helping people with addiction and began to realize the deep impact that addiction had had in her own life, with alcoholism and related issues like abuse and dysfunction having been present in her immediate family. After getting her Bachelors in Psychology, she went on to get a Masters in Clinical and Humanistic Psychology in 2005 as well as a post-graduate degree in Couples and Family Therapy.

Although trained in couples and families, Deede most often sees individuals. She finds that her clients are often struggling at work or in their relationships, with underlying issues like anxiety, depression, and trauma. Deede also has a passion for group therapy, and leads a weekly skills group at the center.

Whether working with a single client or several people, Deede finds that skills-based therapy is a defining characteristic of her work.

From issues like communication and boundaries to stress, depression and addiction, she is confident that teaching specific skills makes therapy more tangible and helps empower people to deal with life outside the center. Although her ultimate goal is for clients to see her less and less over time, she points out that not everyone has the same support system of friends and family—and she’s honored that some of her clients see her as their weekly long-term support system instead.

We look forward to sharing our full interview with Deede later this month. Stay tuned for the release!

Monthly Mindfulness

Our bodies may feel a little more sensitive to the things around us this time of year. As our physical environment is changing, our bodies are shifting as well. As we prepare for a new season, practicing the ritual of “Spring Cleaning” may be just as important now as any other season.

Paying mindful attention to your body at this time of year can feel like you are giving yourself a gift, especially as your summer adventures start to slow down. Your choice of cleanse can be simple in nature – setting the intention to get rid of the old and create space for the new.

Your Body. Take a brisk walk around your neighborhood (or a run if you are feeling up for it). Sweat always does the body good and elevates your mental and emotional state.

Your Mind. Life as it is can be a little heavy sometimes, so naturally your mind needs a pause button. Whether that is 5 minutes, an hour or a weekend – give yourself permission to take a deep breath.

Your Soul. Begin to ask yourself what you haven’t let go of. What have you picked up over the past 10 months that no longer serve you and that may be holding you back? Look at what nourishes your wellbeing and depletes it. Remember to be kind to yourself as you process the challenging things.

Your Space. Detox your space – you will be surprised at what enters your home within just a few months. No need to wait until spring time to get rid of those items that clutter your space.

Lavender + Peppermint + Lemon, Oh My!

The powerful trifecta of these three oils can assist in easing those bothersome seasonal allergy symptoms.

  • Lavender: Can provide calming and anti-inflammatory support.
  • Peppermint: Often can produce a cooling effect that can relieve sinuses, headaches, and cleanses airways.
  • Lemon: This citrus oil is uplifting, supports normal inflammation, and brings balance to your immune system.
  • When blended together, these three oils can give your body a boost to adjust to the season!

Essential oils may be diluted to avoid skin reactions. Consider diluting with fractionated coconut, avocado, sweet almond, grapeseed, or olive.

You can diffuse or apply topically. When applying topically, place 3 drops of each on the back of your neck. Note: Lemon can increase photosensitivity. Be mindful if you’ll be spending time in the sun!
